For National Healthy Skin Month this November, we’re discussing the winter itch, as well as highlighting good skincare practices for the chillier months.
In cold weather, humidity drops inside the house and in the environment, and our skin cannot retain the moisture. This leads to cracked lips and dry itchy skin.
Winter itch, also known as pruritus hiemalis, is a skin condition characterised by dry, itchy skin that typically occurs during cold weather. The affected skin usually appears healthy but may feel itchy without showing visible rashes.
This affects nearly 85% of people during the colder months. It occurs due to the combination of dry, cold air and low humidity, which causes the skin to lose moisture rapidly.
People with a background of eczema are often more severely affected because their skin barrier is already sensitive and prone to dryness.
Winter itch is commonly triggered by several environmental and lifestyle factors. Cold and dry air outside and indoor heating inside contribute to reduced moisture in the skin.
The overuse of harsh soaps, exposure to chemicals, frequent washing, and long hot showers or hot tub use can strip the skin of its natural oils. Wearing clothing that irritates the skin or overclothing that leads to sweating can further worsen the condition.
To care for the skin during winter, it is important to use thick moisturisers immediately after a shower to lock in moisture. Taking quick, lukewarm showers instead of long hot ones help preserve the skin’s natural oils.
Wearing multiple layers of soft, breathable clothing can keep you warm without irritating the skin, and humidifying your living space at home can help maintain moisture in the air and prevent excessive skin dryness.
Drink less alcohol, as this is known to dry or dehydrate the skin, and also avoid using alcohol-containing skin care products.
