Contrast MRI scans offer superior visualisation of soft tissues, blood vessels, and organs compared to standard MRI, making them particularly valuable for detecting inflammation, tumours, blood vessel abnormalities, and other conditions that may not be clearly visible on non-contrast scans.
The contrast agent, administered through a small injection, helps highlight specific areas of your body and enhances the clarity of the images produced. This advanced imaging technique is completely painless and provides our radiologists with exceptional detail to accurately diagnose a wide range of conditions affecting muscles, joints, organs, and soft tissues throughout your body.
A contrast MRI scan requires a valid referral from either a GP or a specialist consultant prior to your appointment.
Contrast MRI scans involve the injection of a gadolinium-based contrast agent, which enhances the visibility of certain tissues and abnormalities on your scan. While generally safe, contrast agents carry a small risk of side effects — including allergic reactions and, in rare cases, complications for patients with reduced kidney function.
For your safety, a referring clinician must:
- Confirm that a contrast scan is clinically appropriate for your condition
- Review your medical history for any contraindications (such as kidney disease, previous allergic reactions to contrast, or pregnancy)
- Take clinical responsibility for the referral in line with UK medical and imaging guidelines
If you don’t currently have a GP or specialist referral, we can help. We offer a virtual GP consultation for £50, during which one of our clinicians will assess your symptoms and medical history. If a contrast MRI scan is clinically appropriate, they will issue a referral at the end of the consultation so you can proceed with your booking.

You can choose from scanning packages covering one, two, three, or four body parts in a single appointment, or opt for our specialised Brain + MRA + MRV package for comprehensive neurological and vascular assessment. This advanced brain imaging combines standard brain MRI with magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) to visualise blood vessels and magnetic resonance venography (MRV) to examine veins, providing complete evaluation of brain structure and blood flow.
Scans are performed at our modern facilities in Edgbaston and Pontefract using state-of-the-art MRI equipment operated by experienced radiographers. Your comfort and safety are our priorities throughout the scanning process, with clear explanations provided about what to expect during your appointment.
Following your scan, detailed images are reviewed by specialist radiologists who provide comprehensive reports to help guide your treatment decisions and give you peace of mind about your health.
