Commonly referred to as haematuria, blood in the urine may be visible to the naked eye or detected during laboratory testing. It could be a sign of a problem anywhere in the urinary tract and therefore should be investigated. The most common cause of blood in the urine in the UK is infection (cystitis) but could also be related to cancer of the bladder, ureter or kidney.

All patients with blood in the urine should be thoroughly investigated to include a physical examination, urine sample sent for microscopy, culture and sensitivity (to evaluate for infection), urine cytology (to evaluate for cancerous cells in the urine), imaging (Ultrasound scan or CT scan) and a flexible cystoscopy (telescopic examination of the bladder). We offer treatment to patients experiencing urinary tract infection (UTI). A UTI denotes infection of the bladder (cystitis) or urethra, a tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside. They are extremely common and account for about 8 million visits to health care providers each year. They are common in women and the lifetime risk of developing a urinary infection is 50%.

UTIs are rare in men and when they do occur it is important that they are thoroughly investigated. We offer kidney stone treatment through non-invasive methods such as shock wave lithotripsy which uses ultrasound to pinpoint where the kidney stone is and sends high frequency shockwaves to break the stone down into smaller pieces so it can be passed in your urine. 
  
We offer minimally invasive techniques like ureteroscopy which involves passing a ureteroscope through the urethra and into the bladder where the stone is gently removed or laser energy is used to break the stone into smaller pieces so it can pass naturally in your urine. Ureteroscopy is performed under general anaesthetic. 

We offer percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) for larger or more complex stones whereby a small incision is made in your back and a telescope is passed through it and into your kidney where the stone is pulled out.   PCNL is performed under general anaesthetic. X-rays will be taken during and at the end of the procedure to ensure that all accessible bits of the stone have been removed from your kidney
