Cataracts are a common eye problem that mainly affect older people (age-related cataracts are the most common type), but sometimes younger individuals too. They occur when the lens inside the eye becomes cloudy, causing blurred vision and glare around lights.

Think of it like trying to look through a foggy window. Cataracts can make it difficult to see clearly, especially at night or in bright light. Fortunately, cataracts can usually be fixed with a simple surgery to replace the cloudy lens with a clear artificial one. We normally recommend surgery when cataract symptoms interfere with your daily life.

Dry Eye Syndrome (DES), also known as keratoconjunctivitis is a common condition that occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears or when tears evaporate too quickly.

Ocular surface diseases affect the front part of your eye, including the cornea (clear, dome-shaped surface) and the conjunctiva (thin, transparent layer covering the eye and the inside of your eyelids). They can be caused by various factors which may include Blepharitis (debris in the eyelashes).

Modality offer a range of treatments to treat ocular surface disease from simple eye drops to heat treatments and light therapies.

The cornea, (clear dome-shaped surface) can be affected by a number of diseases include keratitis (inflammation due to infection or injury), keratoconus (a progressive thinning and bulging of the cornea), corneal dystrophies (genetic conditions that cause corneal clouding), and Fuchs’ endothelial dystrophy (disorder affecting the inner corneal layer). Symptoms often include pain, redness, blurred vision, sensitivity to light, and in severe cases, vision loss.

Using our suite of corneal imaging and mapping technology, our specialist team at Modality can get to the root cause of your problem. Treatments offered are aimed at restoring and preserving corneal clarity and vision.

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases where the optic nerve becomes damaged, resulting in sight loss. It’s one of the most common causes of blindness worldwide. Most people experience no symptoms in the initial stages, and the only way to know if you have it is to have an eye examination. If it’s not treated, glaucoma will lead to irreversible sight loss and even blindness.

A glaucoma diagnosis might be unexpected and frightening, but our internationally renowned Glaucoma Consultants will give you all the information, advice, and outstanding care you need to feel confident in your glaucoma journey.

Medical retina is a specialised field focused on diagnosing and treating non-surgical conditions of the retina (light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye). Key conditions managed within this specialty include diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusions, and retinal dystrophies.

Utilising advanced diagnostic tools such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), ultra-widefield photography and retinal angiography, our expert medical retina specialists can detect and monitor retinal diseases with high precision. Treatment approaches may involve intravitreal injections, laser therapy, and management of other medical conditions impacting retinal health. Early detection and management are crucial in preventing vision loss.

Also known as ophthalmic plastic surgery, oculoplastics, is a specialised field of medicine which concerns the plastic and reconstructive surgery of the orbit (bony socket), the tear ducts and the eyelids, as well as cosmetic surgery of the brows and eyelids.

This can include surgeries to treat issues like droopy eyelids, excess eyelid skin, eye socket fractures, tumours / lesions around the eyes, and tear duct obstructions. Our experienced Oculoplastic surgeons are trained to perform both cosmetic and reconstructive procedures, to improve the function and appearance of the eyes and their surrounding areas.

Uveitis is an inflammatory condition affecting the uvea (middle layer of the eye) which includes the iris, ciliary body, and choroid. It can cause symptoms such as eye redness, pain, blurred vision, light sensitivity, and floaters.

Causes of uveitis range from autoimmune disorders to infections, and trauma. Sometimes the cause may be unknown. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent complications such as glaucoma, cataracts, or permanent vision loss. Treatment typically involves medications to reduce inflammation or treat infection, as well as treatments to suppress the immune system.

Closely linked to Medical Retina, Vitreoretinal medicine is a specialised field within ophthalmology that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the vitreous humour (watery gel inside the eye) and the retina (light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye), which are both crucial for vision. Our world class surgeons, use advanced treatment techniques to deal with various conditions affecting these parts of the eye.

Common issues they treat include retinal tear and detachment, as well as epiretinal membrane. They also treat complications of medical retina conditions such a diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration.
