An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is a non-invasive scan that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce images of soft tissues, such as organs and muscles within the body.
Our MRI scans are performed by experienced radiographers, who are highly trained specialists. We offer a variety of scans types covering a range of body parts.
At the appointment, most patients stay in their own clothing, however you may be required to change into a gown if you are wearing clothing with zips/clips etc. You will be asked to remove any metal objects from your body.
You lie on a table that slides into a tube-shaped scanner.
The scan will be performed; you stay still and may hear tapping or beeping noises. This is completely normal. MRI scans are very noisy procedures; you will be provided with ear protection in the form of ear defenders/ear plugs, depending upon the type of scan you are having.
You will be provided with an emergency buzzer to alert the radiographer should you face any difficulties, and the radiographer will get you out instantly once this is pressed.
Your MRI scan will last between 15 and 90 minutes depending on the size and number of areas to be scanned.
On the day of your MRI scan you should be able to eat, drink and take any medication as usual, unless you’re advised otherwise.
You may be asked not to eat or drink anything for up to 4 hours before the scan or perhaps be asked to drink a fairly large amount of water beforehand. This depends on the area on the body that you are being scanned.
Before you attend your scan, please remove as much metal as possible and try to limit the amount of metal on your clothing by wearing items such as jogging bottoms. Please remove jewellery/piercings, belts, medical patches and metal hair extensions. Women should wear bras with no underwire if possible.
Once the MRI scan report is completed, our system automatically and immediately delivers the report to the referrer. Your medical practitioner will contact you to discuss the results. Reports will be emailed to self-pay patients, who will then be able to discuss their results with their GP/Healthcare professional.
MRI is very safe and most people are able to have one. An MRI may not be suitable in some instances, such as:
You have metal in or on your body
You are pregnant or breastfeeding
You have a specific medical condition such as kidney problems
You have a cochlear implant, cardiac pacemaker, neurostimulator or aneurysm clips
We will also not be able to scan within 6 weeks of a surgical procedure if there has been any implants fitted, unless requested via clinician to ensure the implant is settling correctly.
Your referral will be reviewed by a clinical specialist, who can advise on your suitability for an MRI.
We offer the following MRI scans:
Individual Body Parts
Typically including, but not limited to, brain, shoulder, hand, wrist, arm, spine, and leg.
Total Body MRI Scan
We offer Total Body MRI scans which can provide immediate insight into your overall health. The package includes a scan of your brain, abdomen, pelvis and full spine.
Prostate Screening Package
We offer a prostate screening package for the earlier detection of prostate cancer and diagnosis of related problems. If you have a family history of prostate cancer, want a routine prostate checkup, are worried about your PSA test results or are encountering urinary issues, you may benefit from this package.
This scan combines various imaging sequences and parameters to assess various aspects of the prostate tissue, include a Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test (available at our Edgbaston location).
Dementia Scans
MRI brain scans are often used for diagnosing dementia once the simpler tests have ruled out other problems. A dementia scan can help confirm a diagnosis of dementia and the type of disease causing the dementia and provide detailed information about the blood vessel damage that happens in vascular dementia.
