How to Use Your Private Medical Insurance (PMI)

What is Private Medical Insurance?

Private medical insurance (PMI) helps you pay for medical care outside the NHS.

PMI helps cover the cost of treatments and specialist care, and gives you more choice, comfort, and faster access to care when you need it.

Each plan is different, so it’s good to check what’s included and if you’ll need to pay for anything extra.

At the point where you need to see a specialist for treatment, you can choose to activate your PMI cover, using it to pay for treatment at one of our private facilities. Find out how to access private healthcare at Modality LLP below.

FAQs

If you’re unsure whether you have private medical insurance, there are a few simple ways to find out:

Review your documents: Look for a membership card, welcome letter, or recent correspondence from a private health insurer.

Check with your employer: Some workplaces include private health cover as part of an employee benefits package. Your HR or payroll department can confirm this for you.

Check your bank statements or payslips: Regular payments or deductions to a health insurance company can indicate you have cover.

Contact insurers directly: If you believe you may have had a policy in the past, you can contact major providers to check whether your details are on file.

If you remain uncertain, your GP practice or private hospital may also be able to confirm whether your care is linked to a private insurance provider.

Private medical insurance details can sometimes be easy to overlook, so it’s worth taking a few minutes to review your records for peace of mind.

What is covered by your insurance will differ depending on which private medical insurer you are with and what your policy includes.

Private health insurance typically covers the cost of consultations, diagnostic tests, and treatments at private healthcare facilities. This can include:

– Specialist consultations
– Scans such as MRI and ultrasound
– Surgical procedures and hospital stays
– Certain therapies and treatments depending on your policy

Coverage can vary depending on your insurer, policy type, and level of cover, so it’s important to check your policy details or contact your insurance provider before booking an appointment.

If your insurance policy doesn’t cover the treatment you need, you can still access treatment with Modality LLP using our self-pay route.

Self-pay healthcare is available to anyone who can cover the cost of private consultations, diagnostics, treatments or surgery themselves.

Our dedicated team will assist in talking you through your options with most first consultations available within 7 days of enquiry.

Private medical insurance can make getting care easier, faster, and more comfortable.

Here’s how it can help you:

See a doctor or specialist sooner: Avoid long waits and get treatment when you need it.

Choose your care: Pick the facility, consultant, and appointment times that suit you.

Access a wider range of treatments: Some plans cover procedures or medications not always available on the NHS.

More comfort and privacy: Enjoy private rooms and a quieter, more relaxed environment.

Consistency of care: You can often see the same consultant throughout your treatment, giving you reassurance and continuity.

Peace of mind: Knowing that you have support to get the care you need when you need it.
